New Guidance Available: Making Your County Website Accessible

News Date

A new federal rule requires all county websites and mobile apps to be accessible to people with disabilities. This means your digital services—like meeting notices, payment portals, and forms—must be easy for everyone to use, including those who rely on screen readers or keyboard navigation.

CTAS has created a helpful WCAG Implementation Guide for Counties to walk you through what’s required, what tools to use, and how to get started. The guide explains the timeline based on county size, outlines what needs to be accessible, and includes a checklist to help your office stay on track.

Counties with more than 50,000 people must meet the new standards by April 24, 2026. All others have until April 26, 2027.
